Musical Highlights From The Spirio Catalog
This month we salute jazz legend and Steinway Immortal, the great Duke Ellington. As a composer and performer, Ellington literally helped define the genre of jazz.
Ellington’s music is represented in the Spirio catalog by some of today’s great jazz pianists, including Bill Charlap, Ramsey Lewis, Chris Pattishall and Simon Mulligan. We also have performances from the Duke himself, including a new track that we have recreated from a 1970 studio performance. It’s a carefree version of Satin Doll — one of the many tunes on which he collaborated with Billy Strayhorn — and is available as a Spirio track and as one of our featured videos this month. We have added lots of new Ellington tracks from our reliable Spirio artists this month, including some unique arrangements by jazz great Dick Hyman performed by Meral Guneyman for her Spirio debut.
what’s New
Another Spirio debut this month features the wonderfully inventive composer and pianist Donal Fox. An eloquent improviser, Donal’s music blends classical and jazz in the most persuasive way. His original style bridges a wide range — from Scarlatti to Thelonious Monk to Einaudi — and is always engaging.
Our second video this month is Steinway Immortal Emil Gilels performing Prokfiev's March from The Love for Three Oranges.
In the classical genre, Jenny Lin adds two Chopin Nocturnes, which complete her cycle of those works; Antonio Pompa-Baldi performs a sonata by the entirely under-rated Muzio Clementi; Sean Chen plays one of the thornier works by Aaron Copland, his Variations for Piano; and Stanislav Khristenko presents the emotional Moments Musicaux by Sergei Rachmaninov.

Finally, we have a short Sound of Music set from Sunny Choi.
