Spirio Spotlight

January 2017
Musical Highlights From The Spirio Catalog

This month we move gently into the New Year with elegant pianism from some of our favorite artists and rising stars.

One of the great Jazz pianists of our time, Bill Charlap, has put together a brand-new, subdued yet mesmerizing set, exclusively for Steinway & Sons Spirio. It features standards along with less familiar tunes, including Phil Woods’ “Goodbye Mr. Evans” and “I’m All Smiles” by Mick Leonard, which is also one of two Spirio videos featured this month.

The distinguished French pianist Pascal Rogé, one of the finest exponents of French piano music, joins the Spirio roster this month. Rogé offers the miniatures of Erik Satie, whose 150th anniversary was this past year. A contemporary of Claude Debussy (whose Clair de Lune is featured by Pascal January's second Spirio video), Satie’s gentle and restrained Gymnopédies will be familiar to many. The composer's ever-present humor comes through in the latter works of this set.

We celebrate the centenary of the great Russian pianist and Steinway Immortal Emil Gilels by adding him to the Spirio catalog. The Gilels track is a recreation of his 1971 performance of Prokofiev's March from The Love for Three Oranges

what’s New

Sean Chen, an exceptional talent and multiple award-winner, performs two great Beethoven Sonatas this month, and Korean pianist Jongdo An joins the Spirio roster with a marvelous suite by French Baroque composer Jean-Phillipe Rameau. Ukrainian–American pianist Stanislav Khristenko delivers the complete Moments Musicaux, Op.16 by Rachmaninov, and noted Italian pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi continues his Grieg complete piano music project for Spirio with the Lyric Pieces, Book 4, Op. 47. There is also a four-hand Slavonic Dance by Dvorák performed by Jenny Lin and Tania Tachkova.

Finally, we have added additional tracks from the master of Tango Nuevo, Pablo Ziegler, as well as jazz standards from Earl Rose. There’s even a Bollywood tune from Sunny Choi!
