SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Steinway & Sons is proudly committed to creating a diverse, inclusive and equitable environment in all aspects of our business; to environmentally sustainable manufacturing; and to supporting partner organizations which provide music educational opportunities and instruction across a spectrum of circumstance, age group, and musical tradition.

Steinway & Sons was founded by immigrants on the fundamental belief that the acceptance and encouragement of different ideas and perspectives leads to innovation and success. This underlying pillar of truth has not changed in our company for over 170 years. We at Steinway & Sons want to make certain that we are doing all that we can to make our small community a more positive, equitable and engaging one. Taking a step forward to internally and directly address this hard work, we formed our Diversity and Inclusion Committee to advance an environment of belonging and inclusion in our workplace, where the perspectives and potential of all our valued stakeholders - our employees, customers, artists and partners — are recognized and valued. In the years to come, Steinway & Sons will not forget the social inequities that became so apparent during the pandemic and will continue its work to support all communities.
—Ben Steiner, CEO, Steinway & Sons

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN OUR WORKPLACE

Steinway & Sons is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff and to fostering a workplace that honors and respects a broad range of experiences, perspectives and identities. Together, we strive to create and maintain a work environment that is inclusive, welcoming and equitable for all.  We believe that greater diversity and inclusion can help us better understand situations, identify and overcome challenges, design meaningful solutions and engage with our customers and greater community. However, we think that we can do better than the status quo. We are formulating and implementing ways to improve our processes to achieve these goals, from recruitment and hiring to retention and promotion.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN OUR MUSIC & ARTISTS

Steinway's legacy of artistic collaboration began with Anton Rubinstein and Ignacy Jan Paderewski in the 19th century. William Steinway was constantly experimenting and improving upon the engineering and design of his pianos, gathering musical and experiential feedback from the artists he knew, and responding in continuous innovation — all in pursuit of the Steinway mission: to build the best piano possible.

Today, the Steinway Artist relationship remains an enduring and essential collaboration between pianist and piano maker, founded on the shared commitment to excellence in craftsmanship and artistry, a deep love of music, and dedication to community. The title is intended to formally recognize and honor exceptional musicians, but it also confers benefits to the artist — including access to concert service support throughout its worldwide network of exclusive retail and dealership locations.

Today, Steinway seeks excellence across broad intersections of genre, background, musical style, and personal identities. The Steinway Artist roster continues to grow to reflect the richness and cultural significance of the world’s musical community, and our small place in its ecosystem.
