Spirio Spotlight

a classical PRIMER

August 2016
musical Highlights From The Spirio Catalog

This month we shine the spotlight on music for children to hear and to learn — familiar tunes, popular melodies, and music written for or inspired by children. We begin with Melody's Musical Day, which follows Melody's musical adventures from breakfast to bedtime.

Along with classic children’s tracks, including Mozart’s version of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, the Brahms Lullaby, and lots of Disney Themes, there are also larger works by classical composers, such as Schumann’s Album for the Young, Mendelssohn’s Kinderstücke (Children’s Pieces) and Mompou’s Scènes d'enfants. And adults will appreciate the music, too! We've grouped all of those famous classical melodies together. Each should sound familiar, and offers an opportunity to learn the name of the piece and the composer.

What’s New

Italian virtuoso Antonio Pompa-Baldi brings two great keyboard masterworks to Spirio this month: Bach’s Italian Concerto and Beethoven’s “Waldstein” Sonata. More virtuoso artistry comes from Hungarian Gabor Farkas, whose remarkable technique is on display in Liszt’s Paraphrase on Gounod's “Faust.” And the sensational Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan makes his Spirio debut this month with a Bach melody and Mendelssohn’s dazzling Rondo capriccioso.

David Braid

Authentic sounds of New Orleans comes from the great jazz pianist Davell Crawford. This month we get a preview of his fabulous playing, including tunes from Allen Toussaint and Fats Domino. There is more jazz from the talented Canadian composer and pianist David Braid, and jazz pianist David Benoit contributes to the children’s theme with the Vince Guaraldi classic, Linus and Lucy. Finally, we take a new age journey with the exceptional French pianist Jean-François Maljean.
