Spirio Spotlight

Musical Highlights From The Spirio Catalog
This month Spirio highlights one of the rock stars of classical music — the sensational Chinese pianist Lang Lang. Probably the most famous living classical pianist, Lang Lang’s technique and showmanship are always guaranteed to dazzle. This month we add some new tracks to Lang Lang’s Spirio catalog, including a mesmerizing Chopin Nocturne, as well as a taste of his latest “New York Rhapsody” project with music of George Gershwin.
Be sure to also listen to Lang Lang’s performances of some of the most essential works in the classical canon, including Liszt’s Liebesträume, Chopin’s Minute Waltz, and a classic from his native country, Autumn Moon on a Calm Lake. Our featured video this month is Lang Lang, live at Steinway Hall, performing Gershwin's Prelude No. 3.

what’s New
Pablo Ziegler is a virtuoso of another sort, but one whose music touches the soul. Ziegler was born in Argentina, where, along with the legendary Astor Piazzolla, he took the classic tango dance form of Buenos Aires and created an entirely new style of music — blending tango, jazz and improvisation with gorgeous melodies. These works are typically performed with percussion and the traditional bandoneon, but Pablo has created inspired solo-piano versions of these works just for Spirio.
From Argentina, we travel toward Spain, with the greatest piano work by Enrique Granados, whose centenary is this year. His Goyescas, inspired by the art of the 18th-century painter Francisco Goya, is a masterpiece for solo piano and is performed by Korean pianist Yoonie Han, a specialist in this repertoire. On Spirio, you can also hear a sampling of Granados himself playing his own works recreated from performances from 1914. We feature another work by Granados this month, his dynamic Allegro de concierto, performed by the South African pianist Anton Nel, who also gives us a wondrous Mozart Sonata (K. 457) and the Debussy Prelude Bruyères.
