For a reliable connection and easy-to-operate demos, the standard connection of the iPad to the Spirio piano via Bluetooth is optimal. This set-up offers a customer the best opportunity to accurately visualize ownership. If there is significant Bluetooth interference creating frequent signal drop-outs, the hard-wired iPad set-up is optimal. When viewing on an iPad becomes difficult, i.e. with larger groups or during informal presentations, then wirelessly integrating a monitor is optimal. For larger, scheduled presentations, the hard-wired monitor and iPad set-up is optimal.
Connections Guide
Choosing a Connection Set-up
A Note on Wi-Fi
WiFi is a critical part of Spirio demonstrations and functionality. While not necessary for music playback, a strong WiFi connection is critical because:
- Allows for easy iOS and Spirio App updates
- Access to the Spirio Spotlight page
- Better video playback when utilizing an AppleTV and an integrated monitor
- Fast troubleshooting (including the “Sync Now”, SignOut, and delete/re-install of the app)
Guidelines for in-store WiFi:
- 10 Mbps is the minimum required upload and download speeds for Spirio videos to function properly
- To determine your upload and download speeds, run a test at www.speedtest.net. We suggest testing at or near the Spirio.
There are four ways to set-up Spirio for presentations - the standard connection set-up and three alternative connection set-ups.
Standard Connection Set-up
Used for day-to-day in-store demos
STEP ONE
- Press the Bluetooth button on piano. The Bluetooth button is found under the piano, behind the treble leg on rear of key bed, as shown here.
STEP TWO:
- Go to iPad Settings >
- Bluetooth >
- Under Bluetooth – turn on Bluetooth
- Under Bluetooth My Devices, locate the Spirio Piano and tap on the name to connect (The name will be Steinway Spirio plus the unique serial number)
- It will show Connected on screen
- Spirio is now connected and ready to play
Hard-Wired iPad Set-up
Used for eliminating Bluetooth interference issues
STEP ONE
- Bypass Bluetooth by unplugging the right-most wire (see a.).
STEP TWO
- Attach the (now unplugged) wire to the female end of the headphone extender cable (3.5mm male to female stereo audio extension cable - purchased separately).
- We recommend the Mediabridge 3.5mm Extension Cable (12 Feet) - 3.5mm Female To Male Stereo Audio Cable - Step Down Design for iPhone, iPod, Smartphone, Tablet and MP3 Cases - (Part# MPC-35FM-12 )
STEP THREE
- Plug the male end of the extender cable into the headphone port of the iPad.
- No need to change settings in the Spirio App - Spirio will play directly once hard-wired.
Wireless Integrated Monitor Set-Up
Used for showing videos on a monitor and in-store group demos
STEP ONE
Use AppleTV (Generation 4 or 5 only).
- Go to Apple TV Menu Settings >
- Remotes and Devices >
- Bluetooth >
- Choose the Steinway Spirio >
- Connect This Device (shows “Connected”)
STEP TWO
- Go to Apple TV Menu Settings >
- Video and Audio >
- Audio Output >
- Choose the Steinway Spirio >
- Set volume to 100% using the AppleTV remote
- Be sure Surround Sound is set to Stereo
- Be sure Reduce Loud Sounds is turned off
STEP THREE
- Ensure good Wi-Fi as both Apple TV and iPad need to be on the same network
- On the iPad, open Settings, turn Bluetooth off
- Next, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center >
- In the Music box, tap the two ellipses at the top right of the shape >
- Select the AppleTV device from the AirPlay list
- Make sure AirPlay Mirroring is turned off
NOTE
- AppleTV 4K (Generation 5) has prsented one technical problem at several locations during set-up. If the average Wi-Fi speed is less than 25Mbps (as detected by AppleTV), it may not make itself available for AirPlay or Mirroring by other Apple devices. If you are using AppleTV 4K and it doesn't appear in the AirPlay device list of your iPad, you will need to adjust the video settings in the AppleTV Video and Audio menu.
Hard-wired iPad and Monitor Set-Up
Used for scheduled, formal group demos (in and out-of-store) and eliminating wireless connectivity risks
a. Lighting to HDMI adapter, b. headphone jack, c. hard-wired to piano (see steps in Hardwired iPad Setup) using 3.5mm headphone extension cable
STEP ONE – iPad Video to Display Device
- Connect the HDMI cable to the desired monitor/projector and power the display device on
- Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to a Lightning to Digital AV Adapter, which then plugs in to the iPad Lightning port. For reference: Lightning to HDMI adapter
STEP TWO – iPad Audio to Spirio
- Bypass the Bluetooth button (see Hard-Wired iPad Set-Up above)
- Next, plug the male end of the headphone extension cable to the iPad headphone jack
STEP THREE - Order of Connection
- Be aware - when connecting the Lightning to HDMI adapter and the headphone extension cable to the iPad, always connect the headphone cable LAST
NOTE
- Apple iOS defaults both video and audio output to the Lightning port, so you will need to connect to the headphone jack as a last step to re-route the audio away from Lightning. If, during testing, videos play but no audio comes out (or hissing through the monitor speakers), disconnect the audio cable from the headphone jack and re-connect. Apple OS will then prioritize audio output through the most recent connection type.

Which Presentation/Demo set-up should we choose?
-
Why is the standard connection set-up (iPad to Spirio via Bluetooth) considered more reliable than adding a monitor?
While no connection type is 100% error-free, a simple connection often work best. When integrating a video monitor, both an AppleTV and monitor are added, along with a more complex connection-type (AirPlay) – increasing the potential for complication. And while the hard-wired monitor and iPad set-up eliminates wireless connectivity issues, display device issues and can occur, along with iPad output priority complications. -
We bought a monitor and AppleTV for presentations – what should we do to make sure we’re always prepared for demos?
The best ways to ensure success are:• Ensure access to strong WiFi (both speed and coverage), whether in-store or for remote events.
• Ensure AppleTV and iPad software, as well as the Spirio App, are up-to-date and connected to Wi-Fi.
• Establish which connection types you’ll use and when – and stick with them.
• Have all participating sales reps test and use the system often to build experience and confidence.
• Report any issues or complications to spiriosupport@steinway.com.
