Steinway & Sons Welcomes Aaron Diehl to Artist Roster

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (August 30, 2016) – Steinway & Sons is proud to announce that Aaron Diehl has been added to the roster of Steinway Artists, a select and prestigious group of pianists who have chosen to perform exclusively on The Family of Steinway-Designed Pianos. As a Steinway Artist, Diehl is now in the company of the most dynamic piano artists in history, including immortal legends Vladimir Horowitz and Irving Berlin and contemporary icons Billy Joel, Lang Lang, Diana Krall, and Harry Connick, Jr.

Diehl’s addition to the Steinway Artist roster is a new step in his dynamic and versatile career. As a pianist, composer, and bandleader, Diehl is one of the most sought-after jazz musicians of his generation, as evidenced by his critically-acclaimed performances, collaborations, and compositions. He is known for combining traditional and contemporary artistry, playing with what The New York Times describes as “melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint.”

A 2007 graduate of The Juilliard School, Diehl was the American Pianists Association’s 2011 Cole Porter Fellow and a Monterey Jazz Festival Commission Artist. His work on Cécile McLorin Salvant’s “For One to Love” garnered him a Grammy Award, and his latest album, “Space, Time, Continuum,” emphasizes artistic interactions between generations. A few of Diehl’s most recent projects include serving as the music director for Salvant, collaborating and performing with Philip Glass on his complete piano études, and scoring Jeremy McQueen’s ballet “The Black Iris Project.” Diehl is set to be the music director of a large ensemble project that celebrates the music of Jelly Roll Morton and George Gershwin; the ensemble will tour North America in 2017.

On September 21, Diehl will make his debut with the New York Philharmonic during the iconic orchestra’s Opening Gala Concert at David Geffen Hall in New York City. He will perform Gershwin’s Concerto in F in a concert launching the New York Philharmonic’s 175th anniversary season and Music Director Alan Gilbert’s farewell season. Single tickets for the Opening Gala Concert start at $79. Tickets are available online at nyphil.org or by calling (212) 875-5656.

“We’re proud and pleased to welcome Aaron into our family of Steinway Artists,” said Ron Losby, Chief Executive Officer of Steinway Musical Instruments. “His incredible energy and artistry in the jazz piano world are a true inspiration. He wholeheartedly embodies the characteristics we treasure at Steinway: impeccable artistry and passionate music-making. We’re delighted to have him on the Steinway Artist roster.”

“Since the time that I first started playing piano as a child, the name Steinway has symbolized excellence and consistency, two tenets that I have always and will continue to strive for as a pianist and musician,” Diehl said. “It is truly an honor to have my name added to the roster of Steinway Artists.”
