John Wilson

John Wilson is widely acclaimed as one of today’s foremost interpreters and advocates of American piano repertoire. Serving as pianist of the San Francisco Symphony and San Diego Symphony and Principal Keyboard of the Marin Symphony, he stands at the center of the American orchestral landscape. Critics praise his transformative artistry and ability to illuminate the uniquely American voice in classical music—deeply rooted yet forward-looking. The San Francisco Chronicle has commended his “casual virtuosity on piano,” and Gramophone his “wide spectrum of touch and dynamics … appealing gravity and circumspection.”

His solo artistry shone in a sold-out Carnegie Hall collaboration with The Chamber Orchestra of New York featuring Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9, followed by a Carnegie Hall performance of Philip Glass’s Piano Concerto No. 1. He has given headline appearances on the San Francisco Symphony Chamber Series and took center stage at Michael Tilson Thomas’s 80th-birthday gala with the San Francisco Symphony—an event hailed by Bay Area media as a civic touchstone of musical excellence. Concerto highlights included appearances at the Midsummer Mozart Festival’s 2025 season playing Mozart’s 23rd Piano Concerto with conductor Ryan Murray; two of Liszt’s Piano Concerti with the Marin Symphony; and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with conductor Jessica Bejarano and the San Francisco Philharmonic. Recent seasons have cemented Wilson’s reputation as a defining voice in American repertoire through work that ranges from traditional concert halls to unexpected venues. In a landmark partnership with Philadelphia’s BalletX for the Laguna Dance Festival, the Los Angeles Times noted that his playing functioned as a character on stage. He brought classical piano to the tech world, performing live on the main stage of World Summit AI USA.

Wilson’s artistry has been recognized with First Prize at the 2019 International Respighi Prize, the 2021 American Competition, and the 2023 Ernst Bacon Memorial Award—the latter honoring exemplary performances of American music. Earlier milestones include a last-minute triumph in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto at the Sun Valley Music Festival, described as “breathtakingly assured” by Idaho Press, and a standout Mozart K. 491 at the 50th-Anniversary Midsummer Mozart Festival.

Wilson performed on two GRAMMY-winning San Francisco Symphony recordings: Meditations on Rilke (2021, Best Classical Compendium) and Kaija Saariaho’s Adriana Mater (2024, Best Opera Recording). His Avie Records debut introduced the world premiere of Michael Tilson Thomas’s Upon Further Reflection, while his follow-up Rachmaninoff • Gershwin: Transcriptions by Earl Wild surpassed one million streams within its first year; of that set, The Arts Fuse’s Jonathan Blumhofer wrote that Wilson’s “magnificently secure and flawlessly balanced” playing “rivals Wild’s own for character,” while it “exceeds it for recorded quality.” Recent releases include an art-song album with GRAMMY-winning tenor Nicholas Phan on Delos and a recording of Michael Tilson Thomas songs with baritone Ben Jones. A keen and collaborative musician, Wilson has partnered with violinists Joshua Bell and Itzhak Perlman, cellist Johannes Moser, and iconic singers Frederica von Stade, Sasha Cooke, Bernadette Peters, and Michael Feinstein. International tours with the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas and Esa-Pekka Salonen have carried American repertoire from Carnegie Hall to Europe’s foremost venues; guest appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as Guest Principal Keyboard further attest to his stature.

A committed educator and mentor, Wilson serves as Principal Vocal Coach on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He earned his Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Graduate Performance Diploma in solo piano performance at the Peabody Conservatory, and spent formative years with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas.
