University of Michigan

On October 26th, the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance had a 9′ Model D Steinway concert grand delivered to Britton Recital Hall. This marks the completion of the Steinway Concert Grand Replacement Program which began in 2006, ensuring that all their Steinway concert grands are less than 20 years old. With this latest delivery, the university has 7 concert instruments, all of which are Steinways.  Three Boston vertical pianos are back-ordered and will be delivered early in 2019.

October 5th was selection day for the university. Dr. Amy Chang, from the piano faculty, and Robert Grijalva, Executive Director of Keyboard Maintenance and Assistant Director of Piano Technology, flew to the Steinway Factory in New York to select the piano. They were accompanied by our Steinway Institutional Representative Wilbur Miller. They had 7 concert grands from which to choose. Since every hand-made Steinway has a unique tone and touch, the piano faculty personally played each concert grand to find the perfect match.

“With the purchase of this Steinway concert grand,  the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance has reaffirmed its relationship with Steinway & Sons that began almost a century ago.”- Bob Grijalva

The U-M School Music Theatre and Dance has a 94% student retention rate with some of the finest piano professionals in America as alumni. In 2016, the university was ranked by the National Science Foundation as the #1 Public University in the U.S.
