University of Michigan Adds Another Steinway

The University of Michigan added another Steinway B to their ever-growing collection of pianos, now exceeding 255. The search for the perfect piano began when Andy Milne, Professor of Jazz Piano; Robert Grijalva, Executive Director of Keyboard Maintenance and Asst. Professor of Piano Technology; and Wilbur Miller, Steinway Director of Institutional Sales, flew to the Steinway Factory in New York on Friday, October 3rd. The two faculty members had seven Steinways from which to choose. After a day of playing the instruments and a tour of the factory, a decision was made. The piano will be delivered to Professor Milne’s studio in about 3 weeks.

“The factory selection experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for pianists to find a piano that is uniquely “theirs”, like picking a companion for one’s musical lifetime.  I wish everyone could purchase their piano in this way.  The staff at Steinway are so welcoming with first the factory tour, then lunch, and finally the selection process.  My colleague Andy Milne was overwhelmed by the hospitality and just numb with joy over the entire selection experience.  He kept wanting to know if it was real.  It was the ultimate mini-vacation with a prize at the end of the rainbow!”
